What is a speakeasy bar?

If you’ve never heard of a speakeasy bar before, it’s essentially a hidden or exclusive establishment that is typically only accessible through a secret password or by knowing someone who knows the “secret” way in.

During the Prohibition years from 1920 to 1933, alcohol production in the United States was illegal, and all bars around the nation were forced to close.

But, that didn’t mean that people actually stopped drinking!

Many people still wanted to enjoy their favorite cocktails and drinks, so underground clandestine bars, called speakeasies, started popping up all over the country.

These speakeasy bars were often hidden under unintentionally designed doorways, in private apartments under the camouflage of soft lighting, and in cellars surrounded by walls and a secret back door.

They were often found inside buildings that were disguised as other kinds of businesses or establishments, and the exterior of these buildings was usually unattractive and discreet – and typically only accessible through passwords.

Are there actually still speakeasy bars in Paris?

Today, speakeasy bars are gaining popularity once again and can be found in many cities around the world – including Paris!

While speakeasy bars are not as secretive as they once were, many of them still require a secret password or knowing someone who knows the way in, which makes them exclusive and hard to find – but that’s part of the fun!

Parisian speakeasies are known for their intimate settings and creative cocktails, as well as for being one-of-a-kind experiences that transport you back in time to the prohibition era.
