The best place to stay on Santorini all depends on what type of traveler you are and what you’re hoping to get out of your Santorini Greece vacation.

Though it’s not a huge island, there are different areas of the island that are best known for different things. And visiting Santorini can be slightly different from one person to another depending on what part of the island you choose to stay on.

But whether you’re looking to stay at a private pool, or cozy up in a luxurious boutique hotel, you’ll find something to suit your every need in this stunning paradise.

Oia, Fira, Imerovigli, and Kamari are some of the most popular towns in Santorini where people choose to stay. We’ll dive more into why that is and which types of travelers should stay here later on in this article.

I’ve put together a list of my top picks for where to stay in Santorini depending on what type of traveler you are. So pack your bags and get ready to explore one of the most beautiful places on Earth!

The Best Areas in Santorini to Stay In: Fira or Oia?

First, let’s talk about the two main towns where most people choose to stay in Santorini: Fira and Oia. Both offer amazing views, boutique hotels, and plenty of things to do and see.

Fira town

Fira is the capital of Santorini and where you’ll find the main bus station. It’s a great spot if you’re looking for an easy access point where you can easily get around the rest of the island.

You’ll find plenty of shops, restaurants, and nightlife here, so there’s something for everyone. There are also some great luxury hotels with panoramic views of the caldera where you can watch the famous Santorini sunset.

Fira is also closest to the beaches of Santorini where you can relax and get away from the hustle and bustle of the main road.

✅ Pros of staying in Fira:

  • You’re in the middle of all the action: Fira is where you’ll find some of the best restaurants, nightlife, and shopping on Santorini.
  • Easy access to the rest of the island: The main bus station is located here so it’s easy to get around to other parts of Santorini without a car.
  • It’s typically cheaper: If you’re on a budget, Fira might be the best place to stay in Santorini for you as it is typically cheaper than other areas.

👎 Cons of staying in Fira:

  • Not the “typical” Santorini experience: If you’re looking for the classic whitewashed buildings and blue-domed churches, Fira might not be your best bet.
  • Can get a bit touristy: As it’s where most of the activities are in Santorini, it can be quite busy with large crowds during the day.

Things to do in Fira

  • Visit the black sand beach: Kamari Beach is only a few minutes away where you can enjoy some swimming and sunbathing.
  • Shop around: The main street in Fira is where you’ll find plenty of souvenir shops, jewelry stores, and boutiques where you can pick up some unique items.
  • Eat traditional Greek food: Santorini is known for its delicious Greek cuisine, and Fira has some of the best restaurants where you can try it all.
  • Experience the famous sunset: The caldera view from Fira is where you’ll find some of the best sunsets in Santorini!
  • Explore the archaeological site: The Ancient Thera Volcano park is located right in Fira where you can explore the ruins and learn more about the history of Santorini.
  • Catch a boat ride: You can take a boat tour to some of the nearby islands like Nea Kameni where you’ll get an up-close view of the volcano.

And there’s plenty more where that came from!

Oia

Oia is probably what most people think of when they imagine Santorini. It’s where you’ll find the traditional Cycladic architecture and iconic blue-domed churches with some of the best sunset views in all of Greece.

Oia is where most visitors flock to for its incredible views – and rightfully so.

I mean, come onnnnn. Look at that view!

Oia is quite popular during peak season and can get extremely crowded, so if you’re looking for a more peaceful experience then it might not be the best option.

But if you’re willing to brave the large crowds, you’ll be rewarded with incredible views and plenty of excellent restaurants.

Oia is also where you’ll find plenty of luxury hotels where you can enjoy a private hot tub or pool overlooking the caldera side of the island. There are a few trendy day clubs and fine-dining restaurants on this side of the island as well.

✅ Pros of staying in Oia

  • It’s gorgeous: The architecture in Oia is truly stunning, and it’s where you’ll find the iconic white-washed buildings and blue-domed churches.
  • The best sunset views: If you’re looking for the best place to catch the famous Santorini sunset, then Oia is where you should stay in Santorini.
  • Plenty of luxury hotels: For those looking to splurge, Oia is where you’ll find some of the best luxury hotels where you can enjoy a private pool or hot tub with incredible views.

👎 Cons of staying in Oia

  • Can get crowded during high season: Since this is where most tourists flock to when visiting Santorini, it can get quite crowded during peak season.
  • More expensive than Fira: Since it’s more popular and where most of the luxury hotels are, Oia is typically pricier than Fira.
  • Further from the beaches and main activities: Oia is a bit further away from the main beaches and activities of Santorini, so you may have to take a bus or rent a car if you want to explore other parts of the island.

Things to do in Oia

  • Enjoy a luxurious meal at a cliffside restaurant: Oia is where you’ll find some of the best restaurants in Santorini where you can enjoy a delicious meal with an incredible view.
  • Shop for unique souvenirs: There are plenty of boutiques and shops where you can pick up some unique items to take home as a souvenir.
  • Go swimming at Ammoudi Bay: This small beach and port is located about 280 steps below Oia. This is where you’ll find some of the clearest waters in Santorini and where you can take a dip and cool off!
  • Catch the sunset: Of course, Oia is where you’ll find some of the best spots to catch the incredible Santorini sunsets.

Now that we’ve got a general idea of the two main areas where you can stay in Santorini, it’s up to you to decide which is best for your budget and travel needs.

Best place to stay in Santorini

For first-time visitors

If it’s your first time in Santorini, I recommend you stay in Fira. It’s where you’ll find the best restaurants, nightlife, and shopping on the island as well as access to the main bus routes for easy transportation around Santorini.

And it’s typically cheaper than Oia, so if you’re on a budget then this is probably where you should stay in Santorini. I consistently find cheap hotels and lower prices on food and activities here than I do in Oia.

I stayed in Fira during my first visit to Santorini and I’m glad I did! I didn’t want to have to worry about getting around the island and being right in the heart of where all the action was made it easy to explore.

Plus, it was easy to rent an ATV and head over to Oia when I wanted to witness some incredible sunsets from the rooftop bars.

Near the beach

When it comes to where to stay in Santorini near the beach, then your best bet is Perissa or Kamari. These two beach towns are where most people head for some fun in the sun and where you’ll find plenty of beach bars, restaurants, and activities like windsurfing and paddle boarding.

If you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere where you can spend the day lounging on the beach before heading out for some late-night fun in one of the many bars, then Perissa might be where you want to stay in Santorini.

Perissa Beach isn’t as busy as Kamari Beach and it has more of a laid-back, local vibe where you can just relax and enjoy the sun.

Kamari is also a great option if you want to be close to the airport and some of the best wineries on the island. Plus, there are plenty of restaurants where you can enjoy delicious Greek food or a romantic dinner overlooking the sea.

I like Kamari in particular because it has more of an authentic Greek feel and not so much of the touristy vibe that the rest of Santorini gives off.

For sunset views

You can’t take a trip to Santorini without catching at least one sunset. And where better to do that than in Oia? This is where you’ll find the best views of the caldera and where locals and tourists alike flock to just before the sun sets.

Oia also offers plenty of luxury hotels where you can enjoy a romantic sunset from your private hot tub or pool. You’ll find some great restaurants where you can enjoy a romantic dinner or drinks and snacks at one of the rooftop bars.

I visited Oia to watch the sunset on my last trip to Santorini and I can say that it definitely is worth the hype. I don’t know the reason or the science behind it, but the sunsets here really are the best of all the island.

The downside is that during peak season, Oia can get quite crowded. So if you’re looking for a more relaxed atmosphere where you can watch the sunset in peace, then Fira might be where to stay. You can easily just head over to Oia before sunset and then head back to your hotel in Fira after the magic happens.

For solo travelers

Solo travelers visiting Santorini will definitely want to stay in Fira. This is where you’ll find all the best restaurants, bars, and shops as well as access to public transportation so you can get around the island easily.

It’s also a short distance to Perissa and Kamari where you’ll find plenty of beaches where you can meet other solo travelers and make some friends. Fira is the closest to most of the popular Santorini activities and excursions as well, like wine tasting and boat tours.

Fira is where you’ll also find some of the best hostels in Santorini where you can stay on a budget and meet like-minded travelers.

Plus, there are plenty of rooftop bars where you can enjoy amazing views while sipping on some cocktails or enjoying dinner with friends.

For budget travelers

Not only is Fira best for solo travelers, but it’s the best place to stay in Santorini for budget travelers as well.

Fira is also where most of the hostels are on the island so it’s a great place to stay in Santorini on a budget. You can typically find accommodations here for as low as $35-40 per night, depending on the season.

You’ll also find plenty of affordable restaurants where you can enjoy delicious Greek food.

And not to mention there are some great bars in Fira where you can grab a beer or two!

You can also easily access other parts of the island by public transportation, so it’s not only convenient but budget-friendly as well.

For luxury travelers

If you’re looking for a luxurious experience and don’t mind splurging a bit, then Oia is where you should stay in Santorini.

Oia is where you’ll find some of the best luxury hotels where you can enjoy amazing views, private pools, and hot tubs, as well as 5-star restaurants where you can indulge in some exquisite Greek cuisine.

Some of the most famous high-end hotels in Oia are the Canaves Oia Suites where you can enjoy breathtaking views of the caldera and private plunge pools where you can relax after a long day of sightseeing.

If you’re looking for something even more luxurious, then you can head over to Imerovigli where some of the most expensive hotels in Santorini are located. Here you’ll find the perfect combination of luxury and tranquility where you can enjoy a truly unique experience.

Where to stay in Santorini without a car

You technically don’t need a car while visiting Santorini. I spent 5 days here and did just fine without one.

Fira is where most of the public transportation is located and where you’ll find all the best restaurants, bars, and shops. So if you don’t want to rent a car while visiting Santorini, then Fira is definitely where you should stay.

You can easily catch buses or take a taxi to any other area in Santorini from Fira, and you can also hire a private driver to take you around the island.

Or you can rent an ATV from one of the many stands in Fira for about $25 per day like I did.

This will easily take you to Oia, Perissa, Kamari, and other parts of the island and is cheaper than hiring a private driver or taxi everywhere you go.

Where is the best place to stay in Santorini overall?

If you’re looking for the classic Santorini experience with the iconic architecture and sunset views, then Oia is where you should stay in Santorini.

But if you’re on a budget or looking for a more lively experience with easier access to the beaches and cheaper accommodations, then Fira is where you should stay in Santorini.

Overall, I think staying in Fira offers the most flexibility in terms of where to stay and where to go in Santorini. There are more budget-friendly accommodation options here where you can enjoy an amazing experience without breaking the bank.

The Best Hotels in Santorini: Luxury & Cheaper Options

When it comes to Santorini accommodations, you truly are spoiled for choice.

There is a variety of where to stay in Santorini options from hostels, boutique hotels, and family-run establishments to luxury resorts, private villas with private pools, and 5-star accommodations.

Things to Do in Santorini: Best things to see while here

Aegean Sea

The Aegean Sea is where it’s at for luxury travel!

This area is home to some of the best hotels and resorts in Santorini-with jaw-dropping views of the ocean from your own private terrace. You’ll also find plenty of things to do here, like swimming in the pool and taking part in various water sports.

Plus, if you’re looking for a romantic getaway, there are plenty of cruise ships that sail around the region where you can explore nearby islands!

Kamari Beach

This is one of the best areas to stay in Santorini if you’re looking for a more affordable option. The beach is situated on the east coast of the island, where you can enjoy panoramic views and plenty of activities such as swimming or snorkeling.

Plus, accommodation options here are much cheaper than other parts of the island-so it’s great for budget-savvy travelers!

Fira Town

The capital of Santorini is where most of the action takes place.

This bustling town has something for everyone. Here, you can explore traditional villages, take a walking tour of the archaeological site, and visit several blue-domed churches.

There are also plenty of restaurants and souvenir shops where you can find local cuisine and get some amazing deals!

Oia Village

This is where the best views of the caldera cliff can be seen. The small village itself is incredibly charming, with its narrow cobblestone streets and traditional Cycladic architecture.

And during the summer months, it’s where the best sunset views can be experienced from one of the many cafes in the main square.
