As my college town and a city where I spent some of the most formative years of my life, Tempe will always feel like somewhat of a second home to me.

But to people who don’t know Tempe as well as me, it’s easy to think to yourself:

Tempe, AZ is a vibrant city full of things to do, see, and visit, I’m excited to share some of my favorite things about this amazing city with all of you!

From the amazing food options to the beautiful hiking trails, there’s something for everyone in Tempe. Whether you’re into outdoor activities or prefer to spend your time indoors, you’ll find plenty of things to keep you busy during your visit.

1. Desert Botanical Garden

Think that Tempe is just tumbleweeds and cacti? Think again!

This desert city is home to the world-renowned Desert Botanical Garden, which features more than 50,000 plants worldwide. Visitors can learn about the different plant life through educational programs and classes, or simply take a stroll through the scenic gardens. In addition to the wide variety of plant life, the gardens are home to multiple walking trails, a gift shop, and a café.

One of my personal favorite parts of the Desert Botanical Garden is the butterfly pavilion, which is home to hundreds of different species of butterflies! As you walk through the pavilion, you can watch the butterflies flutter around you, and maybe even have one land on you!

Desert Botanical Garden also showcases several rotating exhibits and art installations throughout the year. Past exhibits include sculptures made of recycled materials and photos of the night sky.

Their current exhibit, Guelagetza, celebrates the indigenous culture of Mexico’s Oaxaca state with music, dance, and food. No matter what time of year you visit, there is always something new to see at the Desert Botanical Garden.

The Desert Botanical Garden is definitely one of the most popular Tempe attractions and a must-visit if you want to explore the beautiful scenery of the Sonoran Desert. The garden is open from 7 am to 8 pm daily, and admission tickets can be booked online in advance.

2. Papago Park

Another one of Tempe’s outdoor gems is Papago Park. The park is home to a variety of different attractions, including the Hole-in-the-Rock, which is, quite literally, a hole in a rock that you can climb through! The park also features hiking trails, bike paths, a fishing lake, and the Papago Buttes.

Papago Park is a great place to spend an afternoon if you’re looking to get some fresh air and vitamin D. It’s also a popular spot for hiking and picnicking, and was one of my favorite places to spend a sunny day outdoors when I lived in Tempe back in college.

The park includes a variety of different walking trails, making it the perfect place to get some exercise while enjoying the beautiful desert scenery. For dog moms (and dads) visiting Tempe, Papago also features its own dog park where your fur baby can run around and make new friends.

And for those who want to learn more about the area’s history, the park also includes the Heritage Square Museum. The museum features a replica of an old-fashioned Western town, and visitors can learn about the area’s history through guided tours.

3. Mill Avenue

An iconic Tempe landmark and a place where I may or may not have spent way too much time in college, Mill Ave is the perfect place to enjoy some shopping, dining, and nightlife. The street is lined with a variety of different stores, restaurants, and bars, making it the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening.

For those looking to do some shopping, the Mill Avenue district is home to a variety of boutiques and stores, including Frances, Lucy in Disguise, and plenty of ASU apparel stores. The street is also lined with a variety of restaurants, ranging from fast food to fine dining.

Some of my favorite places to eat on Mill Ave include Daily Jam (a Tempe brunch staple), Mellow Mushroom, and Fuzzy’s Taco Shop. Each of these restaurants offer a unique dining experience, and most have great happy hour deals. Be sure to try some of the unique beers on tap at Mellow Mushroom!

Start with some pregame drinks and tacos at Fuzzy’s, then head to Fat Tuesday for some daiquiris and $1 atomic cherries (vodka-soaked cherries, yum!). And finally, end the night with some live music and Irish whiskey at Rula Bula or a cocktail bucket at CASA.

Whew, sounds like quite the night! I may or may not be speaking from experience…

Regardless of what time of day you visit, Mill Ave is always worth a stroll. From the unique shops to the delicious food, there’s something for everyone on this iconic Tempe street.

4. Phoenix Zoo

This famous zoo is one of the largest non-profit zoos in the United States, and is home to over 3,000 animals. The zoo is divided into different sections, each with its own unique theme and exhibits. Some of the highlights include the Monkey Village, which is home to a variety of different monkey species; the Ocelot exhibit, which is home to a variety of different species of wild cats; and the Stingray Bay exhibit, where visitors can touch and feed stingrays.

This zoo is a great place to visit if you’re looking for fun things to do in Tempe with kids. In addition to the animal exhibits, the zoo also features a variety of different educational shows and activities. And for those looking to cool off on a hot day, the zoo also has its own water park, Wildlife World.

And for those without kids, the zoo is still worth a visit in my opinion. Even as a grown adult, I still enjoy visiting the zoo and seeing all of the different animals! There’s just something about being surrounded by so much wildlife that makes me feel at peace.

If you’re wondering what to do in Tempe that will allow you to get up close and personal with a variety of different animals, the Phoenix Zoo is a great option. The zoo is open daily from 9 am to 5 pm and admission tickets can be bought online or at the location.

5. Tempe Town Lake

A man-made lake in the heart of the desert may sound like an oxymoron, but Tempe Town Lake is one of the most popular attractions in the city. The lake is a great place to enjoy the outdoors, and there are a variety of different activities that can be done here.

For those looking to get some exercise, Tempe Town Lake is a great place to go for a run or walk. The lake has a 3-mile path that surrounds it, making it the perfect place to get in some cardio. And for those looking for a more challenging workout, the lake also has a variety of different obstacles that can be used for things like rock climbing and slacklining.

For those looking to relax, Tempe Town Lake is also a great place to take in the sights and enjoy the Arizona weather. The lake is a popular spot for things like picnics and outdoor yoga. Tempe Marketplace is an open-air shopping center that features a variety of different stores, restaurants, and entertainment options. Some of the stores located here include H&M, Forever 21, Sephora, and Victoria’s Secret.

And when it comes to food, there are over 30 different restaurants to choose from, including things like Cheesecake Factory, The Keg Steakhouse, and P.F. Chang’s.

My personal favorite restaurant at Tempe Marketplace is Kabuki Japanese Restaurant, which has amazing sushi and delicious hibachi.

In addition to shopping and eating, Tempe Marketplace is also a great place to enjoy some entertainment. The mall features an AMC movie theater, as well as a Dave & Buster’s, which is a great place to go if you’re looking for Tempe things to do on a night out.

Tempe Marketplace was one of my favorite places to pass time as a college student. I would often come here to do some shopping, grab a bite to eat, and then catch a movie with friends. And even after graduation, as a working adult, I would still enjoy coming here on the weekends to do some shopping and people-watching.

There are also sometimes events being held at Tempe Marketplace. For example, the center has previously hosted things like farmers markets and holiday festivals. So if you’re looking for stuff to do in Tempe that are both fun and festive, be sure to check and see if there’s anything going on at Tempe Marketplace during your visit!

7. Pueblo Grande Museum

One of the most popular things to see at the museum is the replica of a Hohokam village that was created based on archeological evidence.

The museum also has a variety of different educational programs, making it a great place to visit if you’re traveling with kids. These programs include things like guided tours, hands-on activities, and demonstrations. And for those looking to get even more involved, the museum offers volunteer opportunities where you can help with things like excavations and site maintenance.

8. Tempe Beach Park

As you can probably imagine, Arizona gets pretty damn hot.

And when it comes to the best Tempe activities to partake in during the summer, one of the best things to do is head to Tempe Beach Park to cool off. The park features a large man-made lake where people can swim, boat, and paddleboard. There’s also a sand volleyball court, playgrounds, picnic areas, and a walking/biking path that goes around the entire lake.

Tempe Beach Park is also a popular spot for festivals and events. Some of the things that have been held here in the past include things like music festivals, food truck festivals, and Fourth of July celebrations. The Tempe Freestyle Festival is an 80s-themed dance party that is held at the park each year and features things like live music by local bands, food trucks, and costumed dancers. And the Innings Festival is a Spring Training baseball celebration for music lovers and baseball fans alike.

Whether you’re looking to cool off on a hot day or just want to enjoy some outdoor activities, the Beach Park of Tempe is a great option for fun places in Tempe! You can easily spend a few hours here enjoying the sun and the water.

9. Arizona Mills Mall

For those that love to shop, one of the best things to do in Tempe is visit Arizona Mills Mall. The mall is huge and features a variety of different stores, ranging from things like H&M and Forever 21 to clearance options brands like the Adidas outlet. There’s also a food court with a bunch of different options, as well as a movie theater.

In addition to the regular stores, the mall also has a few attractions that make it a great place to visit with kids. There’s an indoor amusement park called Gameworks, an aquarium called Sea Life Arizona, and a lego store. The mall is also home to an animal adoption center called the Arizona Kingdom, making it a great place to visit if you’re looking to adopt a new furry friend.

Whether you’re looking for a place to shop ’til you drop or just want to find cool things to do in Tempe that the whole family will enjoy, Arizona Mills Mall is a great option!

Arizona Mills is a fairly small outlet mall, but it’s a good option if you’re looking for things to do on a budget as many of the stores offer clearance and outlet pricing.

For a more wide variety of stores and dining options, I’d recommend heading to Scottsdale Fashion Square mall. It’s the largest mall in Arizona and is only about a 20-30 minute drive from Tempe.

10. Arizona State University

This wouldn’t be a proper ‘Best Things to Do in Tempe AZ’ post if I didn’t mention my beloved alma mater and the largest university in the state, Arizona State University.

ASU is a great school for those looking to get a quality education at an affordable price (it’s one of the most affordable schools in the country!). The Tempe campus is also located in a great spot, right in the heart of downtown Tempe with easy access to things like public transportation, restaurants, and nightlife.

There are also a ton of things going on around campus at all times, especially during the school year. There are always things like farmers markets, concerts, and festivals happening. And if you’re a fan of college football, you can catch a game at Sun Devil Stadium in the fall!

Even if you’re not a student, there are still plenty of things to do on ASU campus. You can go for a walk or run on one of the many trails that wind through campus, stroll down the famous Palm Walk, visit one of the museums (like the ASU Art Museum or the Institute for Human Origins), or catch a show at one of the on-campus performance venues.

The Gammage Auditorium at ASU is known for being one of the best performance venues in the state and has hosted things like Broadway shows, musical performances, and lectures. Hamilton, Cats, and Miss Saigon are just a few of the things that have been held here in the past.

If you’re looking for things to do here that are a bit more active, ASU also has a recreation center that is open to the public (for a small fee). The rec center is located not far from Gammage Auditorium and has things like an indoor swimming pool, a rock climbing wall, basketball courts, and a weight room. There are also often things going on like yoga classes, intramural sports leagues, and other special events.

And for stuff to do in Tempe that is a little more low-key, ASU’s campus is also home to a number of different parks and gardens. The Japanese Tea Garden is a serene spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of nature, while the many grassy areas on campus are perfect for picnics, frisbee, or just soaking up some sun.

Whether you’re a student, alumni, or just looking to explore one of the largest university campuses in the country, ASU is definitely worth a visit!

11. Tempe Diablo Stadium

You simply can’t explore Tempe without checking out Tempe Diablo Stadium!

This 10,000-seat stadium is the home of the minor league baseball team, the Arizona League Tempe Angels (not to be confused with the Los Angeles Angels!). It’s also a popular spot for things like concerts, festivals, and other special events.

One of the things that make Tempe Diablo Stadium so unique is its location. The stadium is located in the heart of Tempe, right next to the ASU campus and just a few blocks from Mill Avenue. This makes it super easy to get to and there are always fun things going on around it.

If you’re looking for Tempe Arizona things to do that are family-friendly, Tempe Diablo Stadium is a great option! You can catch a baseball game (they’re usually pretty affordable), or check out one of the many special events that are often held here. The stadium is also a great spot for people watching, as you can usually find a lot of interesting characters milling about.

Even if you’re not interested in baseball or special events, Tempe Diablo Stadium is still worth a visit. The stadium has a really cool, retro feel to it and is one of the best things to see in Tempe.

It’s also located in a great spot for exploring the rest of Tempe, so you can easily walk to things like Mill Avenue or Sun Devil Stadium after taking a look around.

12. SEA LIFE Aquarium

SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium is located in the Arizona Mills Mall, which I mentioned a bit earlier. The aquarium itself is pretty small, but it’s a great place to take kids (or adults who are young at heart!).

Some of the things you’ll see at SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium include sharks, stingrays, seahorses, and other sea creatures. There is also a really cool “ocean tunnel” that you can walk through to get up close and personal with some of the animals.

Admission to the aquarium isn’t too pricey and includes everything from a nose-to-nose encounter with sharks to a touch pool where you can pet stingrays. There are also a number of different talks and feedings throughout the day, so you can learn more about the creatures that call this aquarium home.

For those in need of fun things to do in Tempe with kids (or kids at heart), SEA LIFE AZ Aquarium is a great option. The aquarium isn’t too big, so it’s perfect for younger kids who might get overwhelmed in a larger one. And even if you don’t have kids, the aquarium is still a fun place to check out!

On summer days in Tempe when it’s just way too hot to be outside, SEA LIFE Arizona Aquarium is a great place to go to cool off and escape the heat for a bit!

13. Hall of Flame Fire Museum

Address: 6101 E Van Buren St, Phoenix, AZ 85008, United States

What’s hotter than a museum full of firefighters? Not much, if you ask me!

The Hall of Flame Fire Museum is located in Phoenix, but it’s only about a 20-minute drive from Tempe, so it’s definitely worth a visit if you’re in the area. This interactive museum is dedicated to honoring the history of firefighting and features a number of different exhibits that showcase the history of firefighting.

One of the things that makes the Hall of Flame Fire Museum so unique is the fact that it’s home to the world’s largest collection of antique fire equipment. You’ll see everything from early hand pumps to horse-drawn steam engines, and you can even learn about how firefighters fought fires in the early days.

You’ll see things like old fire trucks, equipment, and even a replica of a 19th-century firehouse. There is also a really cool exhibit that shows how firefighters battled the wildfire that consumed much of Arizona in 2002. The Hall of Flame Fire Museum is also home to the National Firefighting Hall of Heroes, a 3,000-square-foot tribute that honors firefighters who have lost their lives in the line of duty.

If you’re looking for things to do near Tempe that are a bit out of the ordinary, the Hall of Flame Fire Museum is definitely worth checking out. Even if you’re not particularly interested in firefighting, the museum is still really cool and has a lot to offer.

Plus, it’s a great way to escape the heat on a hot day in Tempe!

14. Tempe Improv

Calling all the comedians out there! If you’re looking for unique things to do in Tempe that are a little bit on the quirky side, you’ll want to check out the Tempe Improv. This comedy club has been around since 1974 and has featured some pretty big names over the years, including Jerry Seinfeld, Bill Maher, and Tim Allen.

The Tempe Improv is located right in the heart of Downtown Tempe and is a great place to catch a show or two while you’re in town. The club features a variety of different comedians, both local and national, so there’s sure to be something that will make you laugh.

The shows at the Tempe Improv are definitely not suitable for children, but if you’re looking for a night of adult-only fun, this is the place to be.

Tickets to the shows at the Tempe Improv are pretty reasonably priced, especially considering how much entertainment you’ll get for your money. And if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are a bit more low-key, the club also has a restaurant and bar where you can relax and grab a bite to eat before the show.

The Tempe Improv is definitely one of the more unique things to do in Tempe, so if you’re looking for a night of laughs, this is the place to go. And, if you wanna test out your jokes, there’s even an open mic night where you can take the stage!

15. Old Town Scottsdale

You simply can’t visit Tempe without taking a visit to its most popular nearby cities! And located nearby, Scottsdale is a great place to explore for the day. Scottsdale is home to a number of different things to see and do, but one of the best things about this city is Old Town Scottsdale.

Old Town Scottsdale is one of the most popular tourist destinations in all of Arizona, and it’s only about a 20-minute drive from Tempe. This outdoor shopping mall features a variety of shops, restaurants, bars, and galleries, and is the perfect place to spend a day if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe.

There are plenty of things to do in Old Town Scottsdale, but one of the best things to do is simply walk around and explore. There’s so much to see and do, and you’ll definitely find yourself coming back for more. If you get hungry, there are plenty of great restaurants to choose from, and if you’re looking for a place to grab a drink, there are plenty of bars and clubs to check out.

Old Town Scottsdale is definitely the place to be when it comes to nightlife in the Phoenix metro area!

During the day, Old Town Scottsdale is the perfect place to do some shopping. There are a variety of shops to choose from, and you’re sure to find something that you’ll love. Whether you’re looking for souvenirs, clothing, or just about anything else, you’ll be able to find it in Old Town. The streets are lined with tons of local boutiques, and the massive Fashion Square Mall is also located nearby.

Old Town Scottsdale is also home to a number of art galleries, so if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are a bit more cultural, this is definitely the place to go. Another Arizona Mills attraction, LEGOLAND Discovery Center is perfect for families with young kids. This indoor play area is packed with things to do, including LEGO build and play zones, a 4D cinema, and even a LEGO raft ride.

The build and play zones are definitely the highlight of the LEGOLAND Center, as they allow kids to let their imaginations run wild. There are a variety of different themed build and play zones, including an underwater zone, a pirate zone, and even a princess zone. No matter what your child’s interests are, they’re sure to find something that they’ll love at the LEGOLAND.

The 4D cinema is also a great option for things to do at the LEGOLAND Discovery Center. This cinema shows a variety of different LEGO-themed movies, and the 4D effects make the experience even more fun. And, if you’re looking for something a bit more active, the LEGO raft ride is perfect. This indoor water ride is definitely a hit with kids, and is the perfect way to cool off on a hot day.

With so many things to do, the LEGOLAND Discovery Center is the perfect place to spend a day with your family. And, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are a bit more educational, the center also offers a variety of LEGO-themed workshops, classes, and even birthday parties.

Admission to the LEGOLAND Discovery Center is around $28 per person, making it one of the more affordable things to do in Tempe. And, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are a bit more unique, the center also offers an annual pass that provides unlimited admission throughout the year.

17. Eat Mexican food at El Paisano

I’m not being dramatic when I say that the best Mexican food in Tempe can be found at El Paisano’s. Seriously.

This family-run restaurant has been serving up authentic Mexican cuisine for years, and it definitely shows in their food. On any given day, this place is packed with people looking for a delicious and affordable meal. And since they stay open late, it has become the go-to spot for drunk college students looking for a late-night snack after a night out on Mill.

It’s safe to say the El Paisano (or El P’s as us locals call it) is a Tempe staple.

The menu at El Paisano is pretty extensive, so you’re sure to find something that you’ll love. And, if you’re not sure what to order, the staff is always happy to make recommendations. Trust me, you can’t go wrong with anything on the menu. But, if you’re looking for something truly authentic, I recommend the carne asada fries. The steak is perfectly seasoned and cooked, and the fries are crispy and delicious. The California burrito is also a popular choice!

From enchiladas and tacos to quesadillas and burritos, there’s something for everyone at El Paisano’s. And, if you’re looking for something a bit more adventurous, the restaurant also offers a variety of traditional Mexican dishes, like menudo and pozole. No matter what you’re in the mood for, you’re sure to find it at El Paisano’s.

In addition to their great food, El P’s also has a great atmosphere. The restaurant is decorated with traditional Mexican art, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming.

El Paisano is located in the heart of Tempe, just a few blocks from ASU. And, since it’s so popular with students, it’s usually pretty easy to find a table. However, during peak hours (lunch and dinner), the restaurant can get pretty crowded. So, if you’re looking for a quiet meal, I recommend going during off-peak hours.

If you’re feeling lucky and looking for Tempe activities that are a bit more adult, then I recommend checking out Casino Arizona. This casino is one of the largest in the state, and offers a variety of gaming options, including slots, table games, bingo, and poker. Casino Arizona is located in Scottsdale, just a short drive from Tempe. And, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are free, the casino offers a free shuttle that runs between the two cities.

Admission to the casino is free, and you must be 21 or older to enter. However, if you’re looking to gamble, you will need to purchase chips. Table minimums start at $5, and slots start at $0.25.

No trip to Tempe is complete without exploring the nearby Downtown Phoenix area. This vibrant and historic part of the city is home to a number of restaurants, bars, shops, and museums. And, since it’s just a short drive from Tempe, it’s the perfect place to spend an afternoon or evening.

Start your exploration of Downtown Phoenix at the Arizona Science Center. This museum is great for kids and adults alike, and offers a variety of interactive exhibits. After you’ve worked up an appetite, head over to Pizzeria Bianco for some of the best pizza in the city. Trust me, this place is worth the wait!

If you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are free, be sure to check out the Phoenix Art Museum. This museum is one of the largest in the country, and offers a variety of exhibitions throughout the year. After you’ve explored the museums, take some time to stroll through the historic Roosevelt Row Arts District. This area is home to a number of galleries, shops, and restaurants.

And, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe at night, Downtown Phoenix is the place to be. The area is home to a variety of bars and nightclubs, so you’re sure to find something to your taste. The Monarch Theater is a popular choice for live music, and Bitter & Twisted Cocktail Parlour is the perfect place to grab a drink.

For sports fans visiting Phoenix, a trip to Chase Field is a must. This stadium is home to the Arizona Diamondbacks, and offers a variety of tours and events throughout the year. Basketball fans can catch a Suns game at Talking Stick Resort Arena, and football fans can watch the Cardinals at State Farm Stadium.

No matter what you’re interested in, you’re sure to find things to do in Downtown Phoenix that appeal to you. So, be sure to add this area to your list of places to visit while in Tempe!

20. Salt River Tubing

Address: 9200 N Bush Hwy, Mesa, AZ 85215, United States

One of the most popular activities in Tempe is tubing down the Salt River. This activity is perfect for a hot day, and offers a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors.

Salt River Tubing offer tubing trips down the river and provide tubes and life jackets. Tubing trips typically last about 3-4 hours, and the cost ranges from $20-30 per person. All you need to bring is sunscreen, a hat, and some snacks!

I recommend bringing a cooler filled with drinks and snacks and renting an extra tube to place the cooler in. This way, you can float down the river and stay hydrated (and fed!) at the same time.

The water is fairly calm, and there are always other tubers around enjoying the river as well. The scenery is beautiful, and you’re sure to see a variety of wildlife along the way. Keep an eye out for wild horses – they’re native to this area and often seen along the river!

Tubing down the Salt River is a great activity for families, groups of friends, or anyone looking to relax and enjoy the outdoors. Just be sure to bring some rope with you if you plan on tubing with a group – this way you can tie your tubes together and float down the river as a group!

For a little bit of extra adventure, you could even take a kayaking tour down the Salt River. These tours are typically 3-4 hours long and cost around $60 per person. You’ll get to paddle through some rapids and see the river from a whole new perspective!

Tubing trips are typically available from March through October, so be sure to plan your trip accordingly. Although Salt River is open in summer, I don’t really recommend tubing during this time as summer temperatures in Arizona can climb upwards of 120 degrees Fahrenheit and being in direct sunlight on the river would be incredibly uncomfortable (not to mention dangerous!).

Whether you choose to tube or kayak, spending a day on the Salt River is an activity you won’t want to miss while in Tempe. And, since it’s located just outside of Tempe, it’s the perfect place to spend a day.

21. Topgolf

Address: 9500 Talking Stick Way, Scottsdale, AZ 85256, United States

Looking for things to do in Tempe at night? Then you need to check out Topgolf! This is a great activity for groups of friends or family, and is perfect for both adults and kids.

Topgolf is a combination of golf, bowling, and darts – and it’s a whole lot of fun. You can play in teams of 2-6 people, and the goal is to score points by hitting balls into targets. The targets are located in different zones, and each zone has a different point value. The farther away the target is, the more points you’ll earn.

Topgolf is a great way to spend an evening, and it’s perfect for all skill levels. Even if you’ve never played golf before, you’ll still have a blast at Topgolf. The staff is always willing to help and offer tips, and there are different levels of play so you can choose the one that’s right for you.

Night games at Topgolf are the best – they have a great atmosphere and the lights add an extra element of fun.

After a few rounds of Topgolf, you can head to the lounge area and enjoy some food and drinks. The menu features a variety of appetizers, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and desserts. And there’s a full bar with a wide selection of beer, wine, and cocktails.

Topgolf is open year-round, but hours vary depending on the season. In the summer, it’s open until 2am on Fridays and Saturdays. And in the winter, it’s open until midnight on weekdays and 1am on weekends.

No matter what time of year you visit Tempe, be sure to check out Topgolf! It’s a great activity for groups of all sizes, and is perfect for both adults and kids.

22. Day trip to the Grand Canyon

What’s the best thing to do in Tempe? Well, leave Tempe. Seriously, one of the best things to do in Tempe is to take a day trip to the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Arizona, and for good reason. This natural wonder is truly breathtaking, and there’s no experience quite like standing at the edge of the canyon and looking down into its depths.

There are a few different ways to get to the Grand Canyon from Tempe. You could drive, but the drive is about 4 hours long each way. If you’re short on time and feeling adventurous, you could take a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon from Phoenix. This helicopter experience will take you soaring over the Colorado River and into the depths of the Grand Canyon.

It’s an amazing experience that you won’t soon forget!

If you want to visit the Grand Canyon but don’t want to have to deal with planning transportation there and back, consider taking a guided day trip tour of the Grand Canyon from Tempe. This all-day tour will last about 12 hours, and will take you to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. The tour includes round-trip transportation from Tempe, including a cruise along Route 66.

You’ll also have plenty of time to explore the Grand Canyon and take in its beauty before being dropped back off in Tempe at the end of the day.

The Grand Canyon is a must-see for anyone visiting Arizona, and it’s only a short(ish) drive from Tempe. So, if you’re looking for things to do in Tempe, consider taking a day trip to the Grand Canyon!

23. Hike Tempe Butte (“A Mountain”)

Address: E Rio Salado Pkwy & S Mill Ave, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

Another famous Tempe landmark is “A Mountain,” also known as Hayden Butte or Tempe Butte. This volcanic cinder cone is a popular spot for hiking and running, and offers stunning views of the college town. The mountain is relatively small and the hike is fairly easy, making it a great option for anyone looking for things to do in Tempe, AZ.

There are two main trails that lead to the top of the mountain – the Cave Creek Trail and the Gila Trail. The Cave Creek Trail is shorter and steeper, while the Gila Trail is longer and more gradual. Both trails are well-marked and easy to follow.

Once you reach the top of the mountain, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of Tempe and the surrounding area. On a clear day, you can even see all the way to Phoenix! If you’re looking for things to do in Tempe that are both active and scenic, look no further than A Mountain.

For the best views, I recommend taking a sunrise or sunset hike on A Mountain. The colors are absolutely incredible, and it’s a great way to start or end your day. Just be sure to bring a headlamp or flashlight if you’re hiking at sunrise or sunset, as the trails can be a bit dark!

24. Sip wine at Postino

Another Tempe staple that got me through many a college exam is Postino.

This wine bar is the perfect place to relax with a glass (or bottle) of wine and some small bites. They have quite a few locations in Tempe and the surrounding area, but their Postino Annex location is actually located inside the former Arizona State University’s art annex building, where the founder of Postino attended her art classes in the 90s!

Postino has a great selection of wines, both by the glass and by the bottle. They also have a variety of small plates, including bruschetta, cheese boards, panini, salads, and more. My personal favorite is the prosciutto and fig apple brie bruschetta – it’s SO good.

The thing Postino is most well-known for is its deals – they offer $6 glasses of wine and draft pitchers before 5 pm during the week. But, my favorite has to be their “$20 Bottle & Board” deal, which gets you a bottle of wine and a bruschetta board for just $20! It’s an incredible deal, and the perfect way to relax with friends after a long day.

A fig apple and Brie bruschetta board paired with a bottle of Reisling after a long day of exams? Um, yes please.

A trip to Postino is a must for anyone in need of some wine-fueled relaxation. And, at just $20 for a bottle of wine and a bruschetta board, it’s one of the most affordable (and delicious) Tempe, AZ attractions!

25. Tempe History Museum

Address: 809 E Southern Ave, Tempe, AZ 85282, United States

The Tempe History Museum is a great place to learn about the history of Tempe and the Salt River Valley. The museum is located in the former home of Charles Trumbull Hayden, one of Tempe’s founding fathers. The Hayden House is a beautiful example of Territorial-style architecture, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

The museum offers a variety of exhibits on the history of Tempe and the Salt River Valley, as well as rotating exhibitions on various topics. The museum is also home to an extensive research library, which is open to the public. With its collection of over 70,000 artifacts, the Tempe History Museum is a great place to learn about the rich history of this area.

The Tempe History Museum is one of the best things to do in Tempe for history buffs and anyone interested in learning about the origins of this city. Admission to the museum is free, making it a great activity for budget-minded travelers. Donations are accepted to help support the museum and its educational programs.

26. Culinary Dropout

Oops, yet another Tempe activity regarding food! I promise, there are other things to do in Tempe besides eat and drink (although, those are pretty great things to do, too).

Culinary Dropout is a restaurant/bar owned by the Fox Restaurant Concepts group. The menu features a variety of American comfort food classics with a twist. Think gourmet burgers, wood-fired pizzas, roasted chicken, and more. They also have an extensive beer and cocktail menu, making it the perfect place to grab a drink after work or on the weekends.

Culinary Dropout has a fun, laid-back vibe with games like giant Jenga and cornhole. It’s the perfect place to relax with friends and enjoy some good food and drinks. The price point is a bit higher than some of the other places on this list, but the quality of the food is worth it.

So, if you’re looking for a fun place to eat and drink in Tempe, Culinary Dropout is definitely worth checking out. Just be sure to bring your wallet – it’s not the cheapest place in town!

27. Day trip to Sedona or Jerome

The best thing about Tempe is that it’s fairly centrally-located, making it a great base for exploring other parts of Arizona. If you’re looking for things to do outside of Tempe, consider taking a day trip to Sedona or Jerome.

Sedona is a beautiful town located about 2 hours north of Tempe. It’s known for its red rocks and stunning scenery. There are plenty of things to do in Sedona, including hiking, mountain biking, shopping, and exploring the many art galleries. In the winter, you can even go snowboarding or tubing at the Snowbowl.

Jerome is a small, former mining town that has been reinvented as an arts community. Located about 1.5 hours south of Tempe, it’s known for its copper mines and ghost towns. Today, Jerome is a popular tourist destination with a variety of shops, restaurants, and art galleries. The town has a bit of a quirky vibe and is definitely worth a visit if you’re looking for things to do outside of Tempe.

Both Sedona and Jerome make for great day trips from Tempe. So, if you’re looking for things to do outside of the city, be sure to add these two places to your list!

If you want to spend a day seeing both towns, consider this guided day trip to Sedona and Jerome. You’ll have a chance to explore both cities with a knowledgeable guide, making it a great option for first-time visitors. You’ll even get to see the Montezuma Castle, an ancient Native American cliff dwelling that still stands today.

28. Kiwanis Park

Address: 5500 S Mill Ave, Tempe, AZ 85283, United States

Kiwanis Park is a popular park located in Tempe. The park features a variety of amenities, including a playground, basketball courts, tennis courts, picnic tables, and a fishing pier. Kiwanis Park is also home to the Tempe Butte, an extinct volcano that you can hike to the top of for some great views of the city.

Kiwanis Lake is located in the center of the park and is a popular spot for fishing. The park is also popular with birdwatchers, as it’s home to a variety of birds, including herons, ducks, and geese. Kiwanis Recreation Center, located adjacent to the park, offers a variety of classes and programs for all ages.

The park is a great place to come to relax, exercise, or spend time with friends and family. It’s also a popular spot for events and festivals, so be sure to check the calendar before you visit.

Kiwanis Park is free to enter and is open daily from dawn to dusk.

29. Four Peaks Brewing Company

Address: 1340 E 8th St #104, Tempe, AZ 85281, United States

Four Peaks Brewing Company is a popular brewery located in Tempe and a must-visit for all my beer connoisseurs out there. This brewery was founded in 1996 and is best known for its Kilt Lifter Scottish-Style Ale, which is available on tap and in stores across Arizona.

In addition to beer, the brewery also has a full menu with burgers, sandwiches, salads, and more. And, if you’re looking for something to do on a Sunday, Four Peaks Brewing Company also offers free tours of the brewery. The tours are first-come, first-served and typically fill up fast, so be sure to get there early if you’re interested.

The brewery is open Monday through Thursday from 11am to 10pm, Friday and Saturday from 11am to 11pm, and Sunday from 12pm to 8pm. And, if you’re looking for things to do on a Wednesday night, Four Peaks Brewing Company also offers live music from 6pm to 9pm.
