There are highway tolls between the US and Mexico, so make sure you have enough cash on hand.
It’s also a good idea to have Mexican car insurance, as US insurance is not valid in Mexico.
Flying
If you don’t want to drive, you can fly into the Puerto Peñasco International Airport (IATA: PPE). There are direct flights from several major US cities, including Los Angeles, Phoenix, and Dallas.
Bus
There is also a bus service from the US to Puerto Peñasco. Bus travel takes a bit longer, but can be a more affordable option. The bus ride takes about 7 hours, and there are several stops along the way.

To get to Rocky Point from Phoenix by car, take I-10 to Tucson, then take Highway 19 south to Nogales. Cross the border into Mexico and take Highway 8 east until you reach Puerto Peñasco. The drive takes about 3.5 hours.

What to eat in Rocky Point?
As I mentioned before, the seafood in Puerto Peñasco is some of the best in Mexico. Be sure to try the shrimp, which is often served grilled or fried. Other local specialties include carne asada (grilled steak) and machaca (shredded beef).
Of course, no trip to Rocky Point would be complete without a margarita.
These refreshing cocktails are made with tequila, lime juice, and Triple Sec, and can be found at most bars and restaurants in town.
Bars and Restaurants in Puerto Peñasco
Wrecked at the Reef in Rocky Point is one of the best places to get your adrenaline fix. This bar is located on a pier, and features a mechanical bull, live music, and a variety of drinks.
One of my personal favorite bars in Rocky Point is Skully’s Cantina, which is located in the Old Port area. This open-air bar has a great selection of margaritas and Mexican beers, and is the perfect place to enjoy the sunset. If you look close enough, you can find my name signed on the wall 😉
When it comes to restaurants, there are plenty of options to choose from in Rocky Point. For a casual meal, I recommend La Casa del Capitan, which serves up delicious seafood dishes at reasonable prices. For something a bit more upscale, check out Restaurant Cilantro’s, which offers a mix of Mexican and international cuisine.
What to do in Rocky Point (Puerto Peñasco)
Once you’ve arrived in Rocky Point, it’s time to start exploring!
There’s no shortage of things to do in this vibrant coastal town – from swimming and sunbathing on the beach, to fishing and kayaking in the bay, to exploring ancient ruins and sampling the delicious local cuisine.
Visit the nearby ancient ruins
There are a number of ancient ruins in the area, including the well-preserved cliff dwellings at Kuyima and the imposing Castillo de San Miguel. Both make for an interesting day trip from Puerto Peñasco.
Taste the local cuisine
Mexican food is some of the best in the world, and Puerto Peñasco is no exception. Be sure to try the seafood – it’s fresh and delicious! – as well as the traditional carne asada. And don’t forget to wash it all down with a refreshing margarita.
