For those bitten by the love bug, there’s no better European destination than Paris during the chilly months. Think of it as your romantic wonderland, minus the talking snowmen.

From the steamy café windows to the twinkling Eiffel Tower, every corner of Paris oozes romance, making it an irresistible escape for couples.

Whether you’re a hopeless romantic or just love-struck tourists, this guide is your golden ticket to the most romantic winter experiences in Paris.

As your friendly neighborhood Paris expert, I’m here to unwrap the magic of winter in Paris, making it easy and exciting for everyone, especially those visiting from faraway lands.

Let’s dive into the romance of Paris, shall we?

1. Visit the Paris Christmas Markets

During the holiday season, Paris becomes a city filled with magic and romance. One of the best ways to experience this enchanting atmosphere is by visiting the various Paris Christmas Markets scattered throughout the city.

Strolling hand in hand with your significant other through these markets and admiring colorful Christmas decorations will undoubtedly make your winter in Paris unforgettable!

At these Christmas markets, you’ll experience La Magie de Noël, or “the magic of Christmas”. Wooden chalets host vendors selling everything from local crafts, hot chocolate, mulled wine, to gourmet food.

As you walk through the markets, the scent of roasting chestnuts and freshly made waffles will fill the air. The sparkling holiday lights create a warm and romantic ambiance, perfect for cuddling up close to your partner.

One of the most popular Christmas markets is Champs-Elysées, located along the world-famous avenue. This market hosts over 200 chalets, giving you a wide variety of gifts and treats to explore.

Another notable market is Tuileries Garden Christmas Market, set in the picturesque gardens near the Louvre Museum. This market not only offers shopping but also boasts a Ferris wheel, ice-skating rink, and various carnival rides.

Here are some other great Christmas markets to visit during your stay in Paris:

  • Montmartre: Located in the charming, artistic district of Montmartre, this market offers unique artisanal products and an incredible view of the city from Sacré-Cœur Basilica.
  • La Défense: A more modern Christmas market near the futuristic business district, La Défense offers a unique contrast between the season’s traditional charm and urban Parisian life.

Before you head out to explore these markets, make sure to bundle up as the winter in Paris can be quite chilly!

2. See Christmas Lights Around the City

Visiting Paris during the winter season is a great time to explore romantic activities with your partner. One of the best ways to do this is by strolling through the city and admiring the Christmas lights.

Eiffel Tower Christmas Market

The City of Lights truly lives up to its name during the holiday season. The Eiffel Tower Christmas Market is a must-visit location for couples. With twinkling lights, festive decorations, and local trinkets, the market offers an enchanting atmosphere to enjoy some mulled wine and share a special moment with your loved one.

La Magie de Noël in Tuileries Garden

Another romantic spot to enjoy the holiday spirit is La Magie de Noël, nestled within the Tuileries Garden. The extravagant decorations and lights create a magical ambiance, perfect for a hand-in-hand walk or a cozy chat over a cup of hot chocolate.

Champs-Élysées

The Champs-Élysées is always an iconic Parisian experience, but during Christmas season, it becomes even more special with its impressive display of lights and decorations. The entire avenue is adorned with sparkling lights, making for a wonderful, romantic promenade.

Paris churches

For a more serene and subtly romantic experience, be sure to visit Parisian churches during the Christmas season. The churches decorate their interiors with beautiful lights and decorations, adding an intimate charm for couples to appreciate.

Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur

Montmartre and Sacré-Cœur are already popular romantic locations in Paris, but during Christmas season, the area is further adorned with lights and decorations. Sharing a breathtaking view of the city with your partner, surrounded by festive lights, is an unforgettable experience.

3. Go Ice Skating

Winter in Paris can be cold, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy some romantic activities during the best time for cozying up with your loved one.

One activity that’s perfect for couples is ice skating! It’s a fun and active way to bond while embracing the chilly weather outdoors.

Picture this: you and your partner, hand in hand, gliding across the ice against the beautiful backdrop of the city. It’s a quintessential Parisian winter experience.

If you’re a beginner, don’t worry! You can learn together and share a few laughs while finding your balance on the ice.

There are several ice-skating rinks across Paris, from small neighborhood rinks to more famous and scenic ones. One unique location is the pop-up rink set up by the casual chic brand AMI in the courtyard of the Palais-Royal.

Not only does it offer an intimate and romantic atmosphere, but it’s also a great opportunity to shop at their pop-up store and enjoy a warm drink at their coffee shop.

Remember to dress warmly; although you’ll be getting some exercise, it’s still important to stay comfortable in the cold weather. Don’t forget to bring gloves, as they’re often mandatory for skating at Parisian rinks.

💡 Note: Be sure to check the schedules and rates of the rinks in advance to ensure you get the most enjoyable experience possible.

To make your ice-skating outing even more romantic, plan it at dusk, when the city begins to light up. The twinkling lights and enchanting ambiance surely make for a memorable experience.

4. Climb to the Top of the Arc de Triomphe

Winter in Paris can be chilly, but the romance of the city still shines through. One activity that’s sure to warm your heart is climbing to the top of the iconic Arc de Triomphe.

Imagine this: you and your sweetheart bundled up in cozy scarves, making your way up the approximately 280 steps, feeling the thrill of anticipation as you approach the top.

How cute.

Once you reach the summit, you’re rewarded with a breathtaking panoramic view of the City of Light. Twinkling city lights and the magnificent Eiffel Tower make for a picture-perfect romantic setting.

Now, you might be wondering what makes this a uniquely Parisian winter experience?

First off, the Arc de Triomphe has significantly shorter lines in the winter compared to warmer months, which means you can share this intimate moment with fewer tourists. Secondly, the crisp winter air only enhances the allure of the cityscape from above.

💡 Note: Before you head off for this adventure, keep a few practical tips in mind. Make sure to dress warmly, as the wind can be particularly biting at the top. You’ll also want to wear comfortable shoes for the climb – trust me, it’s a real workout!

As you may already know, Paris can be a bit unpredictable in terms of weather, so be prepared with an umbrella or parka in case of rain or snow.

5. Take a Dinner Cruise on the Seine River

One of the best things to do for a romantic Paris experience in winter is to take a dinner cruise on the Seine River.

Gliding through the heart of Paris, cozying up with your special someone, while savoring delicious French cuisine, and being surrounded by stunning city lights reflecting on the water.

C’est magnifique!

A Seine River Cruise offers breathtaking views of iconic landmarks such as the Notre-Dame, Louvre Museum, and Eiffel Tower. As you float along, you’ll experience unique perspectives of Paris’ architectural masterpieces that you simply can’t get from the streets.

You may even find yourself feeling like you’re in a romantic film scene, all while in the warmth and comfort of a luxury boat.

Sainte Chapelle is a place that offers a magical experience, making it a great option for a romantic winter activity in Paris.

As you enter, you’ll be captivated by the beautiful architecture of this 13th-century chapel. Commissioned by King Louis IX to house the relics of the Passion of Christ, Sainte Chapelle showcases an intricate Gothic style that stands out in the heart of the city.

Walking hand-in-hand along the ornate floor and admiring the towering vaulted ceilings is sure to create a memorable moment.

What makes Sainte Chapelle a truly great place to visit is its magnificent stained glass windows, which cover a whopping two-thirds of the walls. Winter sunlight filtering through these vibrant windows casts a kaleidoscope of colors, creating a mesmerizing atmosphere you and your partner will cherish.

A spiral staircase leads to a balcony level, where you can get an even closer look at these stunning artworks and fall in love with the details.

Some practical information to know before visiting: Sainte Chapelle is located on Île de la Cité, within walking distance from attractions like Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Conciergerie.

The entrance fee is around €11.50 per person, but it’s included for free with a Paris Pass.

So, if you’re looking for a romantic winter activity in Paris that combines history, art, and a dash of magic, Sainte Chapelle is the place to be.

8. Visit the Louvre Museum or Musée d’Orsay

Paris is home to some of the most famous museums in the world, and visiting them with your partner can be a unique and romantic way to spend a winter day.

louvre museum

Let me share with you two of my favorite museums in Paris that you should definitely consider for your itinerary: The Louvre Museum and the Musée d’Orsay.

The Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum is undoubtedly one of the most iconic museums in the world. Known for its glass pyramid and the legendary Mona Lisa, the Louvre offers a vast collection of incredible art, making it a perfect destination for art-loving couples.

During winter, the crowds are often smaller, allowing you to fully appreciate the masterpieces on display without feeling rushed.

In addition to the Mona Lisa, count on meandering through galleries filled with the works of Da Vinci, Raphael, and other great artists.

Don’t forget to take a photo together with the beautiful Louvre pyramid in the background as a memorable keepsake of your romantic winter journey!

Musée d’Orsay

If you and your partner have a shared love for 19th and 20th-century European art, then the Musée d’Orsay is a must-visit. Housed in a former railway station, the architecture of the museum itself is a feast for the eyes.

Once inside, you’ll be greeted by the works of famous artists like Van Gogh, Monet, and Degas. Browse through these amazing collections at your leisure, and don’t forget to stop for a moment to appreciate the unique atmosphere of this fantastic museum.

💡 Tip: To make things practical and budget-friendly during your Paris trip, consider getting a Paris Museum Pass that covers entrance fees to both the Louvre and Musée d’Orsay, allowing you and your significant other to explore these fantastic museums at your leisure.

These astounding museums in the City of Love are perfect for a romantic escapade during winter.

Whether it’s your first trip to Paris or just another unforgettable adventure, visiting the Louvre Museum or the Musée d’Orsay will surely bring a touch of warmth to your hearts as you explore the magic of Paris in the colder months.

9. See a Show at Opéra Garnier

Even when the temperature drops, the City of Love stays as enchanting and romantic as ever.

One of my favorite winter activities when I’m in town? Catching a show at the Opéra Garnier.

Trust me, it’s a truly magical experience.

You might be wondering what makes Opéra Garnier so special. Well, for starters, it’s an architectural treasure designed by Charles Garnier back in the 19th century.

The moment you step inside, you’ll be swept off your feet by the building’s rich history and decorative details. It’s almost like you’re time-traveling back to an era of opulence.

Aside from admiring the architecture, it’s all about enjoying the show.

From enchanting ballets to powerful operas, the Opéra Garnier offers a diverse range of performances that’ll keep you and your special someone entertained. Just imagine cozying up in one of those plush red seats, hand in hand, as you both get lost in the captivating world on stage.

But, hey, if you’d like another option, Opéra Bastille is also a fantastic venue for a romantic winter night out in Paris. It’s a more modern and expansive theater, but still has excellent acoustics and a fantastic lineup of shows.

💡 Here’s a pro tip: to make the night extra memorable, dress up and dine in one of the nearby restaurants before the performance.

It’s always a good idea to book your tickets in advance, especially during the holiday season. For a full list of shows and ticket availability, visit the official website. Ticket prices may vary depending on the performance, but I’d say it’s totally worth it.

10. Take a Cooking Class

Winter in Paris is the perfect opportunity for you and your loved one to bond and learn something new together.

One of the best things you can do is to take a cooking class. Not only is it a fun and immersive experience, but it also allows you to create delicious French dishes you can share in the cozy ambience.

Paris is known for its exquisite cuisine, and what better way to explore it than by learning from local chefs? There are many cooking classes available in the city.

From traditional French dishes such as coq au vin and crème brûlée, to mouthwatering pastries and desserts, you’ll find a class perfectly suited for your taste buds.

Taking a cooking class together is not only informative and productive, but it’s also a fantastic way to strengthen your bond. You’ll work together as a team, laugh over mishaps, and taste your culinary creations.

Plus, you’ll impress your friends and family back home with your new skills.

French cooking can be intimidating, but don’t worry! These classes are designed for all levels of expertise, from beginners to accomplished home chefs.

💡 Note: When choosing a class, make sure to check if it’s taught in English, as well as the duration and costs involved. Although classes may vary in price, they often include ingredients, equipment, and even wine to accompany your meal.

11. Go Wine Tasting

Take your loved one on a romantic adventure in Paris by going wine tasting!

Inviting your partner to explore the flavors of exquisite French wines is not only a fun thing to do in Paris in winter, but it can also create unforgettable memories.

One fantastic way to enjoy the Parisian wine culture is by joining an indoor wine tasting tour.

Who needs vineyards when you have cosy wine cellars offering a lovely experience to taste some of the finest wines France has to offer?

I highly recommend this type of tour to embrace the joy of good wine while staying warm in the chilly winter months.

Here are three must-visit wine cellars to consider while planning your romantic wine tasting adventure:

  1. Le Baron Rouge: This rustic and authentic wine bar, located in the 11th arrondissement, offers an extensive selection of wines served straight from the barrel. Cozy up with your loved one and discover your new favorite wine in this unpretentious setting.
  2. La Dernière Goutte: Combine learning with pleasure at this friendly wine shop in the Saint-Germain neighborhood. Engage in a tasting session led by knowledgeable staff, delve into the rich history of French winemaking, and even try your hand at a blind tasting challenge.
  3. O Château: A more sophisticated option, O Château is a perfect choice for a romantic evening. Indulge in a candlelit tasting experience with an expert sommelier, who will guide you through the nuances of French wine while you enjoy each other’s company.

Remember that wine tasting can be intimidating for some, so don’t hesitate to ask the sommeliers in these establishments about the wines, their origins, and the best way to savor them.

This way, you and your partner will both learn something new and grow closer while enjoying your time in Paris during winter.

12. Have a Picnic at Tuileries Garden

Winter in Paris has a magical feel, making it the perfect backdrop for a romantic picnic.

Even though it might be chilly, bundle up and find a cozy spot at the Tuileries Garden to enjoy a romantic meal with your special someone.

In contrast to the bustling streets of Paris, Tuileries Garden offers a serene and picturesque setting as you share your favorite French delicacies. The garden is adorned with beautiful statues and offers a fantastic view of the distant Arc de Triomphe.

As one of Paris’s most famous parks, spending time here in the winter months gives you a unique experience with fewer crowds.

To prepare for your picnic, visit a local boulangerie and pick up a fresh baguette and some buttery croissants. Next, stop at a fromagerie for some decadent French cheeses.

Finally, don’t forget to grab a bottle of wine or your favorite hot beverage to stay warm while you savor your romantic winter picnic.

When you find the perfect spot in Tuileries Garden, spread out a warm blanket and enjoy each other’s company amidst the peaceful surroundings.

The crisp winter air and the enchanting beauty of the garden creates a memorable and intimate atmosphere, making every bite an experience you’ll treasure.

13. Check Out Galeries Lafayette

Paris in winter is truly a magical experience, and one of the must-visit places during your romantic getaway is the Galeries Lafayette.

This historic department store is not only a shopping haven, but it also offers an unforgettable experience with several activities and attractions that are perfect for couples.

First off, let’s talk about the enchanting ambiance. During winter, the store’s facade and interior are adorned with twinkling lights, gorgeous Christmas trees, and festive decorations, making it a visual treat to explore.

The main highlight for couples is probably the window shopping. Galeries Lafayette is renowned for their creative and mesmerizing window displays, especially during the holiday season.

Don’t forget to visit the stunning rooftop terrace that boasts breathtaking panoramic views of the Parisian skyline – it’s one of the best rooftop bars in Paris!

Snap some photos, share a warm embrace, and take a moment to appreciate the romantic essence of the city of love.

I wholeheartedly recommend Galeries Lafayette as an essential part of your romantic winter trip to Paris. Its unique blend of shopping, dining, and sightseeing creates a truly special memory to treasure with your loved one.

14. Take a Trip to Disneyland Paris

Disneyland Paris is not just for kids but can also be a magical experience for couples, especially during the winter season.

Imagine walking through the park hand in hand, with twinkling lights and winter decorations setting the scene for a romantic day.

And the best part is, it’s super easy to get to Disneyland Paris from the city center!

Here are a few top things do in Disneyland Paris for you and your significant other during wintertime:

Watch the Nighttime Spectacular Show: During winter, Disneyland Paris puts on a breathtaking nighttime show called “Disney Dreams of Christmas,” which features dazzling lights, festive music, and favorite Disney characters. Snuggle up with your partner and enjoy this mesmerizing spectacle together.
  5. Explore the Disney Village: After a day at the park, unwind in the Disney Village where you can explore shops, dine at themed restaurants, or catch a movie together. It’s a great place to create unforgettable memories as a couple.

Remember that winter weather in Paris can be quite cold, so make sure to dress warmly and wear comfortable shoes for your day at Disneyland Paris.

💡 Note: To make your trip more enjoyable, check the park’s schedule beforehand and plan accordingly to avoid large crowds and make the most of your day.

15. Try a Cup of Mulled Wine or ‘Vin Chaud’

There’s nothing quite like cozying up with a warm beverage during cold winter days. And when you’re in Paris, the quintessential drink to try is Vin Chaud or hot mulled wine.

Regardless of where you find yourself in Paris, a steaming cup of Vin Chaud is bound to chase away the winter chill and warm you from the inside out.

Made from fruity red wine, it is often infused with spices like star anise, ginger, cardamom, cloves, and pepper, resulting in a sweet, soothing beverage that’s just perfect for those frosty Parisian evenings.

As a bonus, the rich aroma of the spices often leaves a comforting scent that lingers in the air.

There’s something magical about Paris during the winter, especially when the city is adorned with twinkling lights and bustling Christmas markets. And mulled wine is a staple at these Christmas Markets.

As you stroll through these festive markets hand-in-hand with your special someone, you’ll find various stalls offering cups of Vin Chaud.

Accompany your drink with some freshly cooked crepes or waffles, and immerse yourself in the charming, romantic atmosphere.

Drinking Vin Chaud is not just about enjoying a warm beverage, but also about partaking in a cherished French tradition. You can find locals and tourists alike at popular spots like cafés terrasses and cozy bars, huddling around tables and sipping on this delightful concoction.

So when you sip on your cup of Vin Chaud, know that you’re experiencing a piece of French culture!

16. Visit the Palace of Versailles

Visiting the Palace of Versailles in winter is a great idea for a romantic getaway. The enchanting atmosphere and magnificent architecture during this time of year is unmatched.

versailles inside

Here are a few reasons why I think it’s an amazing winter activity for you and your loved one.

First, while Versailles is usually bustling with tourists during other seasons, the winter crowd is significantly thinner. This means you’ll have more opportunities to enjoy intimate moments as you explore the palace and its snow-covered gardens.

versailles garden

Second, the palace itself is always breathtaking, but the winter season showcases a different side to this historical gem. The crisp air accents the opulence of the architecture, giving you the feeling that you have traveled back in time.

Take your time exploring the palace’s countless rooms, and imagine the lavish court life that took place there. Walk through the historic halls like royalty, discovering every little detail together.

Here’s a mini itinerary for your visit:

  1. Start with a stroll in the palace’s breathtaking Hall of Mirrors.
  2. Admire the snow-kissed gardens from the palace windows.
  3. Snap a couple’s photo at the entrance of the Grand Trianon.
  4. Warm up with a cup of hot chocolate at one of the on-site cafes.

Versailles in winter is the perfect backdrop for a memorable romantic adventure.

17. Drink Hot Chocolate

There’s really nothing more delightful than sipping a delicious, rich hot chocolate during the colder months in Paris.

The city is known for its cozy cafés, making it the perfect spot to catch up with your loved one (or just your own thoughts!).

Now, you may be wondering, where can I find the best hot chocolate in Paris?

Well, here are a few of my favorites:

  1. Angelina: One of the most famous hot chocolate venues in the city, Angelina is located near the Louvre. They serve a signature hot chocolate called “African,” named so for its unique blend of cocoa beans. It’s so rich that it’s served with a side of whipped cream! Make sure you dress appropriately because the luxurious setting requires a relaxed but elegant attire.
  2. Jacques Genin: Tucked away in the Marais district, Jacques Genin is best known for its intricate pastries and chocolates. Their hot chocolate is a perfect balance of creaminess, sweetness, and, of course, the intensity of the cocoa. It’s perfect for a Parisian winter afternoon.
  3. Jean-Paul Hévin: A renowned master chocolatier, Jean-Paul Hévin offers an exclusive range of hot chocolates that cater to different cocoa preferences. From spicy to fruity and even one that incorporates cheese (don’t knock it until you try it!), the variety is quite impressive. The intimate setting of this cosy café only adds to the romantic atmosphere.
